In our explorations we've realized every place has a story to tell. Learning the historical story behind state parks, ports, cities, and our government is just one more way to better understand our world. We try to be curious about each place we visit and drive through. Sometimes it's as simple as a google search about the history of a small town, or visiting a museum explaining why a place even exists.

All these state and national parks and monuments we visit exist because people decided they were important to protect, share and steward. Becoming a steward of outdoor spaces doesn't just mean keeping it clean and respecting it while you're visiting. It also means understanding how they're funded, preserved, and kept for future generations.
A few years back we wrote an article about trying to save Fairfield Lake State Park. Unfortunately, even with all our efforts, the park was lost, the land was sold, and what was once a public space and lake is now being developed into multimillion dollar homes and private access.
While the story of losing Fairfield Lake State Park is a sad one, it's important to keep telling the story. We learn from the loss of that park, both that we CAN lose a park, and how important it is to be stewards of that park. Shortly after Fairfield closed, Proposition 14 passed here in Texas, which put lots of money towards creating new Texas State Parks.

There's something to learn with every adventure. You could hear a bird sound while walking to your car to go to work and wonder, "what kind of bird was that?" Nature study has become part of our every day life, forever being curious about the world around us. This has fed into how we homeschool and how our daughter studies.

You don't need a green thumb to garden, you just need a bit of curiosity and willingness to get your hands a little dirty. We have a beautiful garden, but I've also killed a lot of plants. Gardening doesn't have to be scary.
