Life doesn't always go according to plan. Sometimes it changes in an instant. Sometimes healing takes years. At Stronger Than Fire, resilience isn't about pretending hard things didn't happen—it's about learning how to keep living, creating, exploring, and finding joy because they did. Here you'll find our house fire story, honest conversations about PTSD and anxiety, practical resources, and personal reflections about rebuilding a meaningful life one day at a time.
The Story Behind Stronger Than Fire
Before the fire...
We were your average millennial family, just starting out. We'd somehow bought a house just after the housing market crisis, and we'd started to build a small family with our dog Sam and our toddler Issa.
Bill and I were both questioning our career directions. I was doing portrait photography and graphic design and wrestling with abandoning my portrait photography business. He was stuck in retail management, unhappy, but committed to supporting our new family. Looking back our discontent with our careers was more about us not being fulfilled in the thing we were spending most of our time doing.
We had a good friend group, volunteered in our community and were just existing.
February 10, 2017, the day everything changed.
We watched our house burn. We said goodbye to our dog on the front lawn while people watched. We almost lost Bill, who was asleep in the house at the time.
The Rebuild
Day two after the fire, I borrowed my mom’s computer (mine was nothing but ash) and started writing...and I never stopped.
After losing everything; our belongings, our home, our dog, my life's work and gear, Bill's job, we had to rebuild not just our home, but who we wanted to be too.
A few months later, our builder walked off the job leaving us with no money, a frame and some drywall. From there we had to not only rebuild our lives, but our physical home too, all with our own hands.

Healing
Hurricane Harvey hit our area mere months after our fire. We worked through panic attacks, PTSD, and anxiety as a result of our experiences. In the midst of rebuilding our home, our builder walked off the job, he had been paid in full. We had to heal while we were rebuilding.

Today
Today, we're focused on life and not just existing. We love the outdoors, we love experiencing the world, we love authentic relationships. Resilience isn't just about survival, it's about healing and building something better.
